چکیده

We have studied the vibrational properties of some of the compounds based on the Type II silicon, germanium, and tin-based clathrate materials using LDA electronic structure methods. The lattices in these framework materials have open cages which can contain weakly bound guest impurities, and these guests produce local (“rattling”) vibrational modes. Such modes may scatter the extended, heat carrying acoustic vibrational modes of the framework, potentially reducing the thermal conductivity. We present results for the vibrational spectra of the Type II clathrate compounds Na16Cs8Si136, Na16Cs8Ge136, and Cs24Sn136. We discuss trends in the vibrational spectra of the framework host material and of the localized, rattling frequencies of the guest modes as the host changes from Si to Ge to Sn.

Rattling ‘‘guest’’ impurities in Si and Ge clathrate semiconductors

In addition to their ground state, diamond structure, Si, Ge and Sn can form crystalline solids called clathrates. As in the diamond structure, in the clathrates, the Group IV atoms are tetrahedrally coordinated and sp covalently bonded to their neighbors. However, the clathrates contain pentagonal atomic rings and have open-framework lattices containing 20-, 24and 28-atom ‘‘cages’’. There are ...

Semiconducting Clathrates Meet Gas Hydrates: Xe24[Sn136]

Semiconducting group 14 clathrates are inorganic host-guest materials with a close structural relationship to gas hydrates. Here we utilize this inherent structural relationship to derive a new class of porous semiconductor materials: noble gas filled group 14 clathrates (Ngx[M136], Ng = Ar, Kr, Xe and M = Si, Ge, Sn). We have carried out highlevel quantum chemical studies using periodic Local-...

Theoretical study of the lattice thermal conductivity in Ge framework semiconductors.

The lattice thermal conductivity of Ge clathrates is investigated by evaluating the linear response theory heat current correlation functions using molecular dynamics. Clathrate crystals with and without guest atoms in their fullerane cages are studied. In comparison with that of diamond-phase Ge, the clathrate conductivity is reduced by approximately 1 order of magnitude due to the open framew...

Electronic and vibrational properties of framework-substituted type-II silicon clathrates

Framework substitution has not been widely reported among the type-II group-IV clathrates. We have performed a theoretical study of the Cs8Ga8Si128 and Rb8Ga8Si128 clathrates, using the local-density approximation LDA to density-functional theory. In Rb8Ga8Si128 and Cs8Ga8Si128, eight Si atoms are substituted by Ga at the 8a crystallographic sites of the framework. We predict that both Rb8Ga8Si...

Theoretical Evaluation of the Thermal Conductivity in Framework (Clathrate) Semiconductors

We have calculated the room temperature thermal conductivity in semiconductor germanium clathrates using statistical linear-response theory and an equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) approach. A key step in our study is to compute a realistic heat-current J (t) and a corresponding auto-correlation function < J (t) J (0) >. To ensure convergence of our results and to minimize statistical fluctua...
